Preservation of Borrelia kansas and Plasmodium berghei.

Borrelia kansas and Plasmodium berghei have been stored after slow freezing in thioglycollate-glycerol medium for a 6-month period. During this time, 75% or more of the Borrelia remained motile, many intracellular malarial parasites exhibited amoeboid movement, and the growth pattern of both organisms in mice remained unchanged.

The Effects of Splenectomy on Pattern of Nitric Oxide Induction and Pathogenesis of Rodent Malaria Caused by Plasmodium berghei Infection

Background and Aims: The aim of this study is to clarify nitric oxide (NO)-production by spleen and the importance of spleen in malaria infection in murine model. Materials and Methods: Thirty outbred NMRI female mice were divided into four groups, Group I: No intervention (Healthy control), Group II: With splenectomy (Healthy test), Group III: No intervention, Inoculation of contaminated bloo...

Plasmodium berghei crystalloids contain multiple LCCL proteins

Malaria crystalloids are unique organelles of unknown function that are present only in the mosquito-specific ookinete and early oocyst stages of the parasite. Recently, crystalloid formation in Plasmodium berghei was linked to the parasite protein PbSR, a member of the Plasmodium LCCL protein family composed of six modular multidomain proteins involved in sporozoite development and infectivity...

Acute Toxicity Studies and Anti-plasmodial Potentials of Newbouldia laevis and Crateva adansonii in Plasmodium Berghei-infected Mice

Background: Newbouldia laevis and Crateva adansonii are popular plants used traditionally in the management of patients with malaria infection in Nigeria. In this study, the acute toxicity and anti-plasmodial effects of the leaf extracts of Newbouldia laevis and Crateva adansonii were investigated in mice. Methods: The Anti-plasmodial activities of both extracts were investigated individual...

In vivo Antiplasmodial and Cytotoxic Activity of Achyranthes aspera and Ficus thoningii in Mice Infected with Plasmodium berghei

Malaria remains o n e o f the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in tropical countries, and the alarming spread of the drugs resistant malaria parasite underscores the need to develop new antimalarial compounds. In this study, the phytochemical constituents, in vivo antiplasmodial, and cytotoxic activity of methanolic extracts of Achyranthes aspera and Ficus thoningii were evaluated usin...
